Syllabic nasals in Mycenaean

A guest lecture by Ph.D. associate Christina Skelton from UCLA, interning at the Centre for Textile Research at the University of Copenhagen.

The outcome of the Proto-Indo-European syllabic nasals in Mycenaean Greek is somewhat puzzling: an alternation between o and a in the vicinity of a labial consonant, and a elsewhere.

Various proposals have been put forth to explain this distribution, including dialect variation and sound change in progress. In this talk, Christina Skelton re-examines all of the previously advanced proposals, collects more data, and presents a conclusion of her own to the issue.
