Dette er det første offentlige nyhedsbrev fra forskningscentret Roots of Europe - Language, Culture, and Migrations ved Københavns Universitet.

Et nyt forskningscenter ser dagens lys

Den 1. juli 2008 var en glædens dag på Institut for Nordiske Studier og Sprogvidenskab, for den dag lød startskuddet til et femårigt tværfagligt forskningscenter Roots of Europe - Language, Culture, and Migrations, ledet af lektor, dr.phil. Jens Elmegård Rasmussen. Centret, hvis forskningsområde er Europas sproglige og kulturelle forhistorie, er muliggjort gennem en bevilling på 17,5 mio. kr. fra Københavns Universitets stjerneprogrammer.

Ved centret er ansat syv forskere og en sekretær. Hertil kommer 24 eksterne samarbejdspartnere fra ind- og udland. Se mere herom på centrets hjemmeside for ansatte.

Festforelæsning og reception

5. september 2008 gav en af centrets eksterne medarbejdere, lektor, ph.d. George Hinge fra Institut for Sprog, Litteratur og Kultur, Aarhus Universitet, en velbesøgt festforelæsning med titlen Sproghistorie og identitet: Lingvistiske glans- og trusselsbilleder, som er tilgængelig på centrets hjemmeside.

Ved den efterfølgende åbningsreception talte bl.a. rektor for Københavns Universitet Ralf Hemmingsen og centerleder Jens Elmegård Rasmussen. Billeder fra receptionen er ligeledes tilgængelige på centrets hjemmeside.

En kollega skifter status

En af de syv fastansatte forskere ved centret, postdoc, ph.d. Jenny Helana Larsson, er blevet udnævnt til lektor i baltiske sprog ved Stockholms Universitet primo 2009. Dermed skifter hun status til ekstern medarbejder i centrets regi.

Kollegerne ønsker hende held og lykke og glæder sig over også at kunne nyde godt af hendes ekspertise i fremtiden.

Rødder i æteren

Jens Elmegård Rasmussen og Adam Hyllested vil præsentere centrets opgaver og fokusområder i årets to sidste udgaver af udsendelsen "Ud med sproget" på Danmarks Radios P1. De sendes hhv.:

Blokseminar om indoeuropæisk mytologi

I uge 49 havde centret besøg af professor Peter Jackson fra Institutt for religionsvitenskap, Universitetet i Tromsø. Peter Jackson, som er en af centrets eksterne medarbejdere, gav et tredages blokseminar over tre dage om indoeuropæisk mytologi og poetik samt en forelæsning med titlen From Rasâ to Alpheios - Mythical Variations on the Pursuit of Sacrifice. Begge arrangementer var velbesøgte og givtige, og vi glæder os til samarbejdet med Peter Jackson fremover.

Kalender

Blokseminar om nominal orddannelse i gotisk

En anden af centrets eksterne medabejdere, dr. Antje Casaretto fra Institut für Linguistik, Universität zu Köln vil i 25.-27. februar gæste centret for at afholde et blokseminar om germansk orddannelse samt et gæsteforelæsning om det gotiske sprog. Hold øje med onlinekalenderen på centrets hjemmeside for nøjagtig information om tid og sted.

Molekylær antropologi

Endnu en ekstern medarbejder, Peter K.A. Jensen, som er klinisk lektor ved Institut for Human Genetik, Aarhus Universitet, besøger os torsdag den 26. marts 2009 (tidspunkt og lokaleangivelse følger) for at fortælle om, hvordan antropologien og andre historierelaterede fag kan anvende den molekylære genetik til at kortlægge bl.a. menneskets ældgamle vandringsruter. Forelæsningen bliver offentlig; lokaleangivelse og nøjagtigt tidspunkt følger. Læs mere om arrangementet på onlinekalenderen.

The Sound of Indo-European - phonetics, phonemics, and morphophonemics

16.-19. april 2009 er centret vært for den internationale kongres The Sound of Indo-European - phonetics, phonemics, and morphophonemics.

Centrets medarbejdere takker for den overvældende interesse for kongressen og glæder sig til at modtage endelige abstracts fra alle deltagere (deadline 1. februar 2009). Der er nu lukket for nye foredragstilmeldinger, men man kan stadig tilmelde sig som deltager uden foredrag.

Komitémøde

En gang årligt skal centrets arbejde evalueres af en komité bestående af seks internationale forskere. Tidspunktet for det første af disse møder er fastlagt til den 8.-11. oktober 2009.

Opening of the research centre

1 July 2008 was a joyous day at the Department of Nordic Studies and Linguistics: it marked the opening of the interdisciplinary research centre Roots of Europe - Language, Culture, and Migrations. The centre, which is headed by associate professor, Dr Phil Jens Elmegård Rasmussen, runs a research project on the linguistic and cultural prehistory of Europe and is financed via the Programmes of Excellence at the University of Copenhagen.

The centre employs seven scholars and a secretary. In addition, it co-operates with 24 external, academic members: see the basic information at our staff homepage.

Celebratory guest lecture and opening reception

On 5 September 2008, the opening of the centre was marked officially by a celebratory guest lecture by one of the centre's external members, Ph.D. George Hinge of the Institute of Language, Literature and Culture, University of Aarhus.

The title of the lecture was: Sproghistorie og identitet: Lingvistiske glans- og trusselsbilleder. Dr. Hinge's manuscript is available on the project website. We were pleased to note that the lecture was both well attended and well received.

Following the lecture, an opening reception was held. Speeches were given by the Rector of the University of Copenhagen, Ralf Hemmingsen and Jens Elmegård Rasmussen among others. Photos from the reception are likewise available on the website.

A colleague changes status

One of our internal members Ph.D. Jenny Helena Larsson, has been assigned associate professor of Baltic languages at the University of Stockholm. She is to take up her new office at in the beginning of 2009. She will, however, continue her co-operation with the centre, albeit as an external member.

All of Jenny Helena Larsson's Copenhagen colleagues wish her the best of luck with her new position and look forward to continuing to profit from her expertise.

Roots on the air

Jens Elmegård Rasmussen and Adam Hyllested will present the research project and its focal areas on Danish Radio, in this year's two final editions of P1's "Ud med sproget". The programmes will be broadcast:

  • Sunday, 21 December 2008, 3.33-4.00 p.m. (repeat on Monday 22 December, 8.48-9.15 p.m.)
  • Sunday, 28 December 2008, 3.33-4.00 p.m. (repeat on Monday 29 December, 8.48-9.15 p.m.)

Indo-European religion and mythology

In week 49, professor Peter Jackson of the Dept. for Religious Studies, University of Tromsø, visited the centre. Dr. Jackson, who is an external project member, gave a three-day block seminar on Indo-European religion and mythology, and a guest lecture entitled From Rasâ to Alpheios - Mythical Variations on the Pursuit of Sacrifice. Both events were well frequented and fruitful, and we look forward to further co-operations with Dr. Jackson.

Block seminar on nominal word formation in Gothic

In February 2009, another external project member, Dr. Antje Casaretto of the Dept. of Linguistics, University of Cologne, will give a block seminar and a lecture on nominal word formation in Gothic at the centre. Please consult the online calendar for information on time, place and exact title of the seminar.

Molecular Anthropology

26 March 2009 (time and location t.b.a.), Peter K.A. Jensen, clinical associate professor at the Institute of Human Genetics, University of Aarhus, will give a talk about how molecular genetics can be exploited to map out the ancient migrational routes of man. The Sound of Indo-European - phonetics, phonemics, and morphophonemics

16-19 April 2009, the centre will host the international conference The Sound of Indo-European - phonetics, phonemics, and morphophonemics.

We would like to thank everybody for the overwhelming interest in the conference and look forward to receiving final abstracts from all participants (the deadline is 1 February 2009). We do not accept any further applications from speakers, but still welcome registrations from participants wanting to attend the conference without presenting a paper.

Board meeting

The centre is to be evaluated annually by an international advisory board consisting of six scholars. The first annual board meeting is set to take place on will take place on 8-11 October 2009.
